The Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Fire District 3 personnel responded to Blackwell Road just north of Dean Creek Road around 5:30 p.m. Friday for a motor vehicle crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semitrailer. The semi was traveling north on Blackwell Road, and the passenger car was traveling south, according to a press release from the sheriff's department. "Based on the initial investigation, it appears the passenger car drifted into the oncoming lane and struck the semi-truck," the release stated. A passenger from the car involved was ejected and died at the scene. The passenger was identified as Bella Keesee, 6, the release stated. Two other passengers and the driver in the car were transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The driver of the semitrailer was not injured in the crash. The driver of the passenger car was identified as Necia Marie Hanson, 27, of Gold Hill, the release stated. The initial investigation showed alcohol was a factor in the crash, and Hanson was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. Blackwell Road was closed for more than five hours after the crash while investigators worked at the scene. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Department at 541-774-6800 and refer to case number 16-7151.
