Reno leads South past Sheldon, 2-1 Last season, Sheldon handled South Medford rather easily in girls soccer, outshooting the Panthers 30-14 en route to a 5-1 non-conference win in Eugene. But Saturday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park, South Medford sprung a newly-designed defense on the Irish, and senior Erin Reno took care of the scoring as South came away with a 2-1 victory. "To win is marvelous because they're one of the best programs in the state," South Medford coach Buzz Thielemann said. The Panthers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead thanks to Reno's goal in the upper-right corner of the net from 10 yards away at the 13-minute mark. "It was just tenacity on her part," said Thielemann. "Erin is playing on another level right now." South received excellent play on the defensive end from sisters Brittany and Courtney Quinowski, team captain Katie Casebeer and stopper Krista Lane. Also, junior midfielder Heidi Meador was assigned the task of marking Sheldon's top player, senior midfielder Shelby Crabtree. "Heidi basically nullified her," said Thielemann. "Crabtree orchestrates everything for them. We knew if we didn't do something about her, it would be a long day." Reno provided South a needed insurance goal 41/2 minutes into the second half. The Irish cut the deficit when Kelsey Provo rocketed a shot into the net from 22 yards out with six minutes left in the game. But South Medford junior goalkeeper Sarah Bryan was up to the task in holding off Sheldon's attack late in the game. Bryan made a diving stop to deflect a game-tying shot with two minutes remaining. "They had a great opportunity to tie it up," said Thielemann. "Sarah saved it for us." SOUTH EUGENE 1, NORTH MEDFORD 0 - South Eugene's Whitney Clark scored the game's lone goal on an assist from Caitlin Schauer in the 60th minute to win the non-conference match at Hoffbuhr Field. A bevy of scoring opportunities late went unfinished for North, but the midfield play of senior McKenzie Weiler, senior Lindsey Arkenburg and junior Lisa Munyon was solid. It was the second narrow loss in two days against Eugene teams for the Black Tornado (1-2). North fell 2-1 to Sheldon Friday. EAGLE POINT 5, PARKROSE 0 - At Portland, central midfielder Terra Jackson notched the first hat trick of her career, doubling her scoring total to six goals for the season. The Eagles (4-1 overall) used two Jackson first-half tallies to build a 2-0 halftime edge. Jackson scored in the 27th minute off an assist from fellow central midfielder Ali Rotar, then Jackson finished a pass from outside midfielder Tasha Berger in the 32nd minute. Forward Alissa Goslin earned her team-leading ninth goal in the 43rd minute, assisted by sophomore forward Kristina Bateman. Bateman did the honors herself in the 54th minute, off an assist from Jackson. Three minutes later, Jackson completed her memorable day by knocking home another assist from Rotar. Freshmen twins Elaina, a sweeper, and Stephanie Graham, a marking back, teamed with fullback Molly Haas to help hold Parkrose to just two shots on goal. ASHLAND 0, THURSTON 0 - At Springfield, Ashland and Thurston played to a draw in what coach Iman Siadat described as the Grizzlies' most physical game thus far. The closest scoring opportunity came when a Thurston penalty shot glanced off a post. Ashland sweeper Kim Thompson and stopper Darby Fallon had strong games, and Stephanie Hargis recorded her first shutout in goal. The Grizzlies are 2-0-2. GRANTS PASS 4, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 - At Grants Pass, senior forward Natasha Crook notched two goals and an assist, and the Cavers used a 3-0 second half to ice the victory. Crook's first goal came in the 10th minute on an assist from senior sweeper Staci Feetham. In the 25th minute, Hidden Valley tied it on a corner-kick header from Shae Ford. Sophomore forward Jakki Pilcher pounced on a rebound from a Crook shot to give Grants Pass (3-0-1 overall) a 2-1 edge in the 45th minute. Senior center midfielder Megan Moon blasted a 40-yard bullet to make it 3-1 in the 50th. Sophomore outside midfielder Kelli Briggs set up Crook's second goal with a through pass in the 60th. Sophomore stopper Katie Lamont ruled the air for the Cavers defense. ROSEBURG 1, SPRINGFIELD 0 - At Roseburg, Roseburg (3-1-1) outshot Springfield 30-3, but couldn't score until four minutes remained in the match at Fir Grove Park. Erika Hall tallied on a header inside the near post off a cross from Sarah Lindbloom. The Indians top scorer, Morgan Downie, might be lost for the season after suffering her third concussion in a game against Thurston on Tuesday. District 6 ST. MARY'S 1, PLEASANT HILL 1 - At Pleasant Hill, Lauren Huizinga provided St. Mary's (1-0-1) with the game-tying score and goalkeeper Annie Maurer turned away 21 shots. The Crusaders trailed 1-0 at halftime. St. Mary's scored almost mid-way through the second half when Huizinga capitalized on a rebound from 6 yards after Emily Smith's shot bounced off a post. The St. Mary's defense, led by Liz Triblehorn, Kendra Gritsch and Katie MacDiarmid, faced a lot of pressure from the physical Billies.
