The Nationals twice trailed by eight runs but chipped away at the lead as Jose Lobaton hit a three-run homer in a four-run fifth, Denard Span hit a solo homer in the sixth and Uggla had a two-run triple and Reed Johnson a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh. Washington's previous biggest comeback was on June 17, 2006, when it trailed the New York Yankees by seven runs. Uggla, released last year by the Braves and still owed over $18 million at the time, was booed in every at-bat, but he quieted the crowd with his first homer for Washington, a blast into the seats in left field off closer Jason Grilli (0-1). MARLINS 4, METS 3: At Miami, Michael Morse hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning that lifted Miami. Steve Cishek walked leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson before earning his second save of the year in four opportunities. YANKEES 4, RAYS 2: At New York, Brian McCann hit two doubles that drove in three runs for the Yankees. New York learned it will be without ace Masahiro Tanaka at least a month because of a mild forearm strain and right wrist tendinitis. Chase Whitley (1-0) was making a spot start that was meant to give Tanaka and others extra rest. But Whitley could find himself in the rotation after giving up six hits and one run in five gritty innings. ROYALS 11, INDIANS 5: At Cleveland, Kendry Morales' three-run homer capped a six-run seventh inning for Kansas City. Kansas City's big inning came after Cleveland had taken a 5-3 lead on Brandon Moss' three-run homer in the sixth. TWINS 3, TIGERS 2: At Minneapolis, Mike Pelfrey turned in his second consecutive strong start, Kurt Suzuki had two hits and the go-ahead single in the seventh inning. Pelfrey (2-0) struck out seven and allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings. MARINERS 2, RANGERS 1: At Arlington, Texas, J.A. Happ doubled his season strikeout total with nine in 6 2-3 innings and Rickie Weeks homered for Seattle. Happ (2-1) allowed only one run and walked one. In 20 2-3 innings over his first three starts, the left-hander had nine strikeouts, three in seven innings of a loss to the Rangers. CUBS 6, PIRATES 2: At Chicago, Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs, Travis Wood tossed seven strong innings and the Chicago Cubs won their fourth straight. Kris Bryant, Starlin Castro, Junior Lake and Addison Russell each had an RBI as the Cubs scored all their runs with two outs. REDS 4, BREWERS 2: At Cincinnati, Johnny Cueto gave up three hits over eight innings during his latest dominant performance against the Milwaukee Brewers, and Brandon Phillips had a two-run homer. Joey Votto and Marlon Byrd added solo homers off Kyle Lohse (1-4) as the Reds clinched the series. BLUE JAYS 11, RED SOX 8: At Boston, Jose Bautista had an RBI in Toronto's five-run third inning, another in a three-run fourth and then added a homer to help the Blue Jays snap a four-game losing streak. Josh Donaldson had three hits, including a homer, and Kevin Pillar also had three of Toronto's 17 hits. DIAMONDBACKS 12, ROCKIES 5: At Phoenix, Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradley was hit in the face by a line drive but walked off the field and gave a thumbs up to the crowd, apparently avoiding serious injury. Mark Trumbo went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer and a two-run triple to lead the Diamondbacks, who ended a four-game skid after a frightening scene early on. ATHLETICS 6, ANGELS 2: At Oakland, Calif., Sonny Gray struck out six and walked one over eight impressive innings, Brett Lawrie hit a three-run homer in the first and the Oakland snapped a season-high four-game losing streak. Josh Reddick hit a solo homer and a two-run single to back Gray (3-0), who retired 13 straight batters during one stretch. CARDINALS 11, PHILLIES 5: At St. Louis, Matt Carpenter tripled and doubled, and the St. Louis Cardinals had season highs in runs and hits to help Michael Wacha remain unbeaten. Matt Holliday and Matt Adams each added three hits for the Cardinals, who finished with 15 hits. ASTROS 14, PADRES 3: At San Diego, George Springer homered and drove in five runs, Evan Gattis added a two-run shot and streaking Houston rolled. Chris Carter connected for a solo drive, and the Astros hit three home runs for the second consecutive night. The AL West leaders have won five straight and nine of 10.
