Hidden Valley rallies past Henley, 5-4 KLAMATH FALLS - Henley pitcher Brad Bailey was in command against Hidden Valley in a key Skyline Conference baseball matchup Tuesday at Kiger Stadium. Bailey had the Mustangs stymied on three hits through five innings and Henley held a 4-0 advantage. But the Henley ace tired in the sixth and Hidden Valley took advantage of the opportunity. The Mustangs scored five runs in the inning and held off the Hornets for a 5-4 victory. The win moves Hidden Valley into a three-way Skyline tie for first with Henley and Phoenix at 9-3. But the Mustangs hold the tiebreaker against the Hornets because they have handed Henley all three of its conference loses. "They've got our number," said Henley assistant coach Joe Tacchini, who was filling in for ill veteran head coach Dale Hauck. "They're a good team. We're going to have to rebound from this and play better the rest of the way." Troy Beard gave the Mustangs a spark by leading off the sixth with a home run. Bailey walked Rob Adler, Scott Hyde singled and Josh Evans delivered an RBI single to cut the Hornets' margin to 4-2. After Calvin Schmidt provided the Mustangs with their third straight base hit to load the bases, Travis Boshuizen was brought in to relieve Bailey. Boshuizen walked Brian Evans to force in the third run of the inning. Boshuizen retired Bryan Kunst on a strikeout, but Nick Mason followed with a two-run single to complete the rally. In the seventh, Henley threatened by getting Brian Kinsman to second with one out. But Hyde, who was brought in to pitch the final inning, got Kirk Cunningham on a called third strike and Bailey to fly out to deep center to end the game. "We manufactured a couple of runs early," said Tacchini. "They made some errors and we took advantage of it. We went flat and were sitting around waiting for something to happen and nothing happened." Mazama tied things up at 1-1 in the fourth inning but the Pirates scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to pull away for the win. Bobby Dawson smacked a run-scoring double in the seventh and Brady Rhodes followed with a single to score two more. Landon Rhodes, Nate Emerson and Eric Kessler each had two hits for Phoenix (11-6, 9-3 Skyline). Michael McDowell reached base on a fielder's choice then scored when Ryan Emery's double eluded Jake Cornelison's diving attempt to catch the ball in left-center field. Emery stole third base then scored on Jon Pope's base hit. In the bottom of the seventh, the Chieftains (4-11, 2-10 Skyline) put together a two-out rally. Matt Branch walked, Nick Bashans singled and both moved up on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Brett Whiteman then blooped a single to right-center field. In the nightcap, the Panthers only had three hits but capitalized on seven St. Mary's errors as the Crusaders dropped to 0-6 in district action. St. Mary's made 15 errors in the twin bill. Chiloquin evened its record at 4-4 in league and is 4-11 overall. Cascade took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning as Adam Rutledge was hit by a pitch and Matt Gmur singled to set the stage for Mychal Sha's two-run double to right field.
