Court records show Ronald Steven Cook, 59, of Ukiah, Calif., was arraigned Monday on charges of second- and third-degree assault and failure to perform duties of driver to injured persons, all felonies. Second-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime, which carries a minimum sentence of 70 months in prison upon conviction. Cook was also arraigned on a DUII charge. He remains in the Jackson County Jail on $150,000 bail, records show. Cook has a preliminary hearing scheduled at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15. A probable cause affidavit shows the charges stem from a late night incident Friday, Dec. 5. At about 11:30 p.m. Friday, Matthew James Martin, 22, was crossing East Barnett Road near the overpass over Interstate 5 when Cook's 2014 Toyota pickup struck him. Martin suffered a laceration on the back of his head from the impact. The large cut on his head had to be closed with 12 staples, the affidavit says. He also had various abrasions on his body.  Asante officials said Martin is listed in fair condition at the hospital. The affidavit says a witness followed the pickup to a nearby Chevron, where the truck parked and a "dark shadow" exited and disappeared. Police called several local motels to inquire about guests whose vehicle matched the description of Cook's Toyota. They determined he was staying at the Best Western Horizon Inn in the 1100 block of Barnett Road and a detective spotted Cook walking back to the hotel at 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, when he was arrested. Investigators believe he hid overnight in brush. "...Cook admitted to driving the pickup and said the male pedestrian had been in the middle of the road when he hit him," the affidavit says.
