Police say woman tried to prevent testimony By JESSICA SMITH Police have accused a Medford woman of threatening a 12-year-old girl to prevent her from testifying about what she saw in the recent shooting of an officer. Kristi Lee Whitehead, 23, of 439 S. Columbus Ave., was arrested Wednesday and booked on a charge of tampering with a witness. Medford police said Whitehead is the woman Moises Sanchez-Llamas, 26, was looking for early Saturday before he allegedly shot and wounded an officer. On Tuesday, a Jackson County Grand Jury indicted Sanchez-Llamas on two counts of attempted aggravated murder, among other charges, for firing two handguns at two Medford officers. Police say a bullet from one of the guns struck officer Scott Clauson, who underwent surgery at Rogue Valley Medical Center to repair damage to his femur. Police said Whitehead, who lived at the Columbus Avenue duplex with the 12-year-old girl and her mother, told the child not to testify before the grand jury. "We're alleging that (Whitehead) threatened the girl not to testify prior to the grand jury and that she told the girl harm would come to her because of her testimony after the grand jury convened," said Lt. Tim George. The girl did testify. The girl apparently was in the Columbus Avenue duplex when Sanchez-Llamas forced his way in. About eight officers responded to calls that an armed man was in the apartment early Saturday. Sanchez-Llamas is accused of shooting at two of those officers, Clauson and Mike Strouse, who returned fire but did not hit the suspect. Police said Sanchez-Llamas was apparently looking for a woman when he arrived at the Columbus Avenue duplex. They have identified Whitehead as the previously unnamed woman. Whitehead was being held without bail in the Jackson County Jail, where she was originally lodged Tuesday for violating probation conditions stemming from a previous conviction for third-degree assault.
