Ashland, Roseburg remain in title hunt The Associated Press The race for the Class 4A Oregon high school football championship is down to four teams, and at least one of them will head to the title game undefeated. Tualatin, Roseburg and Ashland all posted victories last Saturday, joining Jesuit in the semifinals. Tenth-ranked Tualatin defeated Mountain View 23-7, Roseburg downed Lakeridge 28-14 and No. 4 Ashland came back to beat Sunset 24-19. No. 2-ranked Jesuit made the final four last Friday night with a convincing 26-0 win over West Linn. Jesuit and Ashland, both with 12-0 records, will play each other Saturday, while Roseburg (9-2) will play Tualatin (11-1). Out of all the teams, Roseburg may have the most experience. The Indians are 9-1 in semifinal games and are looking to return to the form that earned them state titles in 1995 and '96. Pat Anderson caught two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to lead the unranked Indians past Lakeridge (10-2). Roseburg was down 14-0 in the first half, but rallied to tie it at 14-14 on a 14-yard pass from Linderman to Thys Kuitert with 6:14 left in the third quarter. Both of Anderson's touchdowns came on the same type of play, a short flare pass to the right side of the field. Each time he beat Lakeridge linebacker Lewie Burkhart on man-to-man coverage. Roseburg quarterback Kevin Linderman also lofted perfect passes on each of the scores. The second one, a 47-yarder, put the game away with 5:30 remaining. Ashland needed a 23-yard touchdown pass from James Werbin to Jay Keuster with 8:41 to play to beat the Sunset Apollos (7-5). Sunset cut the lead to 17-7 with 6:18 left before halftime on a 3-yard TD pass from Steve Eney to Chris Fromhart. Bobby Walsh then scored on a 2-yard run with 7:56 left in the third quarter, and a 1-yard TD run by Ray Lyons put the Apollos ahead 19-17. After Keuster's TD gave the Grizzlies the lead back, Ashland held off the Apollos with a fake punt that turned into a 3-yard pass and a first down. Sunset got the ball back, but Eney managed only one completion for no gain on four attempts, and Ashland took over on downs with 29 seconds left. Luke Staley rushed for 246 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday to lead Tualatin past Mountain View. The Timberwolves built a big lead early on touchdown runs of 27 yards by Staley, 9 yards by Ryan McKee and a 19-yarder by Staley to make it 21-0 at halftime. Staley also had an interception in the second quarter. Mountain View (8-4) got its only score when quarterback Taylor Drew ran 11 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-7.
