Medford Urban Renewal Agency board member Gary Wheeler has picked up paperwork from the city recorder’s office but has yet to file it. He said it was too soon to say whether he would run. The fourth generation Rogue Valley resident made an unsuccessful bid for mayor in 1982. In expressing interest in the job, Wheeler joins City Council member Bob Strosser, who has filed the paperwork required of candidates. Mayor Lindsay Berryman announced in May that she would leave office at the end of her second term Dec. 31. Also expiring at the end of the year are terms for council members John Michaels, Jason Anderson, James Kuntz and Greg Jones. Kuntz and Jones have picked up paperwork to run but have not yet filed. Michaels previously said he would not seek re-election but now is expressing an interest. Advertisement "I’ve taken out papers and I’m considering it," said Michaels, who represents Ward 3. If he runs, he will face a challenge from Rogue Community College instructor Michael Torguson, who has filed his paperwork with the recorder’s office. "I’ve been interested in government and politics for a long time," said Torguson. Torguson, a government and business teacher as well as corporate educator and cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor at Asante Health System, is a member of Medford’s Communications Advisory Committee. He is former chairman of the board of trustees for the Medford Elks Lodge. The filing deadline for the Nov. 2 election is Aug. 24. Prior to beginning a campaign, candidates must fill out the city’s election forms and file them with the city recorder. The papers are available at the recorder’s office at City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St. Additionally, those running for council must submit 25 signatures from residents of their ward and those running for mayor must submit 25 signatures from residents of Medford.
