St. Mary's starts fast, sinks rival Cascade Christian St. Mary's wasted little time in putting away Cascade Christian in a Southern Cascade League boys basketball rivalry at the Crusaders' gym Tuesday. St. Mary's used a formula of stingy defense and balanced scoring to post a 67-42 victory over the Challengers. The SCL-leading Crusaders (13-6, 5-0 SCL) opened the game with a 12-0 run and built the margin to 21-2 at the end of the first quarter. "Our perimeter defense was very good tonight," St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug said. "They have some good shooters so we knew we had to contest their shots and get into the passing lanes. We did a good job of it." St. Mary's had six players score seven points or more. The Crusaders took advantage of the post play by junior Michael Fiddler and senior Jared Sharp. Fiddler tallied a game-high 15 points and Sharp tossed in 11. The Crusaders also received some productive minutes from junior reserves Warren Cooper and Greg Gradwell, who combined for 17 points. "We took advantage of what they gave us," said Pflug. "They closed down on Fiddler so our other guys hit some open shots. Hitting our perimeter shots opened up the middle." St. Mary's senior point guard Thatcher Jones provided the necessary court leadership with eight rebounds and seven assists. "Thatcher dished the ball well tonight and played great defense on Mychal Sha," said Pflug. Sha, who tied for Cascade's team-high scoring honors with Zach Mellow, was held to eight points. Cascade Christian dropped to 3-2 in the SCL and 11-10 overall. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (42) - Sha 8, Walker 1, Mellow 8, Fair 4, Gotzman 1, B. Kinney 3, S.
