Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend March 21, 2006 Stand for Children plans rally for school funding Thursday By PARIS ACHEN Mail Tribune Joining a statewide push for more support of public education, a Southern Oregon community group will hold a rally Thursday to call for better school funding. The 30-minute rally by the Southern Oregon chapter of Stand for Children will include comments from Phil Long, superintendent of the Medford School District; Gregg Edwards, vice president of Asante Health System; and June Buck, a retired teacher and activist. The speakers will address how statewide cuts in education funding have affected schools, businesses and children. The Southern Oregon group, which started about a year ago, is seeking to double its membership from 50 to 100 in order to do a door-to-door voter education campaign on the need for more school funding and other mechanisms to support schools, said member Karen Starchvick. One of those mechanisms might be builder-impact fees to help offset the cost of school buildings and infrastructure in new subdivisions, Starchvick said. Advertisement Currently the group is working on a letter-writing campaign to urge lawmakers to allocate $45 million in unexpected lottery revenue to schools.
