Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 24, 2006 Brookins signs with Raiders ASHLAND — One of the deadliest 3-point shooters in Oregon prep girls basketball has signed a letter of intent to attend Southern Oregon University and compete for the Raiders next season. The newest SOU player is Emily Brookins, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard who led Crater High to a Class 4A playoff berth with a team-best 12.3 scoring average as a senior, including 48 3-pointers. The first-team Southern Oregon Conference all-star and academic honoree also led the Comets in assists at 2.9 per game. "Emily is a consistent 3-point shooter who has played against the highest level of competition in high school, and we’re thrilled to have her join our program," said second-year Raider coach Lynn Kennedy. "She has a great work ethic, and she’s a fierce competitor." The two-year starter equaled her season best with 18 points and five 3-pointers against league champion Ashland, and she helped the Comets finish 17-8 overall under the guidance coach David Heard, an SOU graduate. "In terms of 3-point shooting, Emily is as good as anybody I’ve coached," said Heard. "Emily is a great person and a dedicated student, and she’s extremely coachable." Advertisement Brookins is following the same path as two other prominent players from Crater: posts Shawnti Moore (1994-96) and Emily Wiley (1999-2001). Her older sister, Whitney, played four volleyball seasons at Corban College. "Coach Kennedy is going to keep building the (SOU) program, and it’s going to get better and better each year," Brookins said. "I’m excited to be a part of it." Brookins joins an improving Southern Oregon squad that went 12-17 last season, eight wins more than the previous season.
