The fire was reported at about 5 a.m. at 1947 W. Stewart Ave., according to emergency dispatch logs. No one was living inside the home at the time, Medford Fire-Rescue Capt. Sean Schmidt said. The house was included on a list of abandoned, blighted properties kept by the city of Medford. The house had been boarded up for years after a previous fire, according to OnTrack Executive Director Rita Sullivan. The previous fire damaged the house's kitchen and bathroom. "It wasn't rentable," Sullivan said. OnTrack last year proposed building a low-income housing complex there. The house was weeks away from being demolished. Sullivan said no animals or people were injured in the fire. "I'm just glad nobody was hurt," Sullivan said. "We were just waiting for permission to do it (demolish)." Mail Tribune archives show the previous fire did $10,000 in damage when it burned the house April 26, 2013. The house was among a dozen burned in a string of unsolved arson cases in the spring and summer of 2013. Sullivan hypothesized the most recent fire was started by vagrants or vandals. The cause is under investigation. Lisa Meadows, who lives nearby, said she woke up to crews fighting the blaze. The fire was extinguished about 7 a.m., Meadows said. Later Saturday afternoon, crews doused the rubble with water and fire retardant after witnesses called in reports of smoke. Schmidt said that reaching the root of a fire can be a challenge after a roof collapses on a burning structure, so firefighters doused the wreckage at regular intervals throughout the day as a precaution.
