Indians will plant trees ASHLAND -- Representatives of seven American Indian tribes will plant 1,200 tree seedlings Saturday in a reforestation and land restoration project in the Ice House Creek watershed. Tribes represented include the Modoc, Klamath, Shasta Costa, Takelma, Paiute, Cheyenne and Lakota Sioux. The site is on 10 acres of steep land that has been clearcut about 10 miles east of Ashland. A grant to start the Seven Generations Restoration and Educational Project was provided by the Ashland Community Food Store. The effort is organized by a group known as the Lomakatsi Restoration Project, a diverse organization dedicated to community-organized reforestation and land rehabilitation. With the trees planted Saturday, some 5,000 seedlings will have been planted in stabilized soil along streams in the area to help restore endangered salmon, according to project director Marko Bey. Participation by members of the American Indian community is important to the project, Bey said. The restoration of the watersheds helps restore the salmon, which were the main source of life and cultural sustainability of many American Indian people, he explained.
