Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 16, 2005 Lights go out in Eagle Point, Shady Cove Sunday By DAMIAN MANN Mail Tribune Almost 8,000 customers in Eagle Point and Shady Cove lost power early Sunday morning, leaving some residents without electricity for 16 hours. "It’s been a long, dark day for Eagle Point," said Craig Callaway, a resident of Keystone Way. Monte Mendenhall, regional community manager with Pacific Power, said the power went out at 2:27 a.m. when an electrical fault knocked out the Stevens Road substation in Eagle Point. "We lost 5,000 customers at that time," said Mendenhall. "It’s been a very long day for us." Some neighbors saw what appeared to be a lightning bolt, but he said it was more likely equipment problems at the substation. Advertisement The malfunction "back-fed" into the system, causing another substation in Shady Cove to shut down. Power to 2,800 customers in that community was restored within 20 minutes. In Eagle Point, Mendenhall said Pacific Power was able to restore electricity to 2,000 customers by 4:15 p.m., but another 3,000 customers couldn’t turn their lights back on until 6:20 p.m. The Eagle Point substation will be out of service until Pacific Power can repair it, something Mendenhall said could take several days. "We will be working throughout today and into the week to get the service fully restored," he said. In the meantime, the company brought in a portable power-generating station that has been plugged into the system as a stopgap measure. Mendenhall said lengthy power outages don’t occur often, though Rogue River went without electricity for two days in February. In case the power does go out, he suggests that customers avoid opening the refrigerator to maintain a low temperature. In the case of Eagle Point residents, he said, "Freezers will hold their temperature if they (customers) don’t open them for that long." For resident Callaway, it was frustrating waiting for power to be restored. When he called Pacific Power to find out when power would be back on, he was asked if there was anything the company could do. He said he responded, "Yeah, you can say you can send somebody out with a bag of ice."
