Turkey Day weather looks promising, but snow is coming Sunday By Morgan Rothborne Updated: Nov 23, 2022 03:14 PM A A The weather is expected to be tame in the Rogue Valley — with sunshine and relatively warm temperatures for Turkey Day — then the weekend will turn colder with snow at higher elevations and a possible dusting down low Sunday and Monday. Thanksgiving Day will bring sunshine and temperatures as high as the mid-60s, but that weather pattern won’t hold through the weekend, said Sven Nelaimischkies, senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Medford. “We’re starting to head into a more active pattern as we head into Saturday,” Nelaimischkies said. By Friday morning, clouds are expected to start gathering. Saturday should bring some sun and temperatures that will require only a sweater, but come Sunday snow is expected. The more active cold pattern is still expected to be fairly mild. “We’re not expecting much snow accumulation below 3,000 feet at this time; that will be toward the tail end of this front coming through,” Nelaimischkies said. The Cascades will see between 8 and 10 inches of snow. Toward Diamond Lake, up to 11 inches may fall. The National Weather Service has extended an air stagnation alert through Friday for Jackson, Josephine, central Douglas and eastern Curry counties. An inversion created in part by a low winter sun and a long stretch without wind in the forecast has created stagnant air in which pollution can become trapped. “We’ve extended it through Friday, but we’ll see how it plays out. There’s a weak system coming in Sunday and Monday, but it may not be enough to mix things up,” said meteorologist Mike Petrucelli. Rogue Valley residents and visitors should have little weather-related trouble while traveling.
