Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli North storms by Roseburg The Black Tornado avenges last year’s blowout loss to the Indians with a rout of its own By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Thurman Bell couldn’t remember a more thorough beating in his 32 years as the Roseburg High football coach. From the time North Medford quarterback Beau Hovland hit Tyler Engle on a 64-yard touchdown pass on North’s first play from scrimmage, to the final whistle, the Black Tornado dominated one of the traditional football powers of the state. The final score of 49-6 reflected the caliber of the drubbing. "We got an old-fashioned whipping," said Bell, whose career victory total of 247 (against 93 losses and one tie) is sixth-best in state history. "I can’t ever remember a worse loss. "They’re just a very good football team. They have talent all over the field, and we had no answer for their speed and quickness." The Tornado’s swarming defense had stood out in its first two games — 30-0 over Mountain View and 13-12 over Lake Oswego. On Friday, the offense joined the act. Hovland, a junior who had thrown just 19 passes in North Medford’s first two outings, threw 15 times against the Indians. He completed 12 for 202 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Reese Lamson added 137 yards and one touchdown rushing, and Engle — the Tornado’s senior scatback who coach John Beck had said before the game would get more involved in the offense — had 75 yards rushing, 92 receiving and reached paydirt three times. All told, the Tornado racked up 512 yards of total offense — 310 rushing and 202 passing. "We worked a lot on our passing game in practice this week and I really got into a rhythm tonight," Hovland said. "But I had tons of time to throw and that really helped." Hovland hit Engle on a play-action post route on North Medford’s first play from scrimmage. Engle caught the ball in stride and outran Kerry Hall to the end zone to complete the 64-yard scoring play. "I made a move to the outside, then cut to the inside and Beau put the ball right on the money," Engle said. The next time the Tornado had the ball, Lamson squirted through a big hole over right tackle, picked up a nice block from wide receiver Brett Timmerman and raced 44 yards to the end zone to make it 14-0 at the 5:30 mark of the first period. Roseburg stopped North Medford on its next possession, but the Tornado continued its big-play ways at the 9:14 mark of the second period when Engle sped 50 yards for a touchdown on a reverse. "I was surprised that play got called because before the game the coaches were saying they didn’t think it would work," Engle said. "But I got a couple of good blocks (from Hovland and center Aric Hawkins) and was able to get to the perimeter." With Scott Moyer taking over for Hall at quarterback, the Indians finally put together a long drive, marching from their own 20 to the North Medford 30 late in the first half. But the drive stalled on downs at that point. Whatever chance Roseburg had of mounting a comeback vanished quickly in the third period as the Tornado went 79 yards in eight plays for its fourth touchdown and a 28-0 lead. The score came on yet another big play, a 50-yard pass from Hovland to wide receiver Brian Clifton, who shook off Roseburg defensive back Josh Brink at the 13 and rambled in. Hovland threw two more touchdown passes on North Medford’s next two possessions, 28 yards to Engle and 8 yards to Timmerman. Rob Folsom completed the Tornado scoring when he ran 13 yards on the first play of the fourth period to make it 49-0. Roseburg averted a shutout when third-string quarterback Brodie Harvey threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Russ Anderson with 30.6 seconds remaining in the game. "The kids really cranked it up on offense tonight," Beck said. "That was a big emphasis coming into this game." Not that the defense showed any mercy. David Faaeteete set the stage early when the junior tackle twice nailed Roseburg tailback Jake Dorsey for losses. In the second half, Faaeteete made the defensive play of the night, meeting Dorsey an instant after he took a handoff and planting him to the ground. "Our team is for real," Faaeteete said. Bell wasn’t about to argue.
