Enough with the call for diversity in the Academy Awards! How about the lack of white players who have won the MVP in the NBA? Next thing there will be a call for quotas in Nobel prizes. Lou Goldman Ashland Phoenix traffic flow Phoenix is missing out on progress with changing double-lane traffic through the city to a single lane. This is causing major delays on side streets, while traffic is being backed up in long lines going north and south. Patrons are avoiding businesses and finding other routes because of traffic problems. The state is spending millions of dollars on a huge interchange at Phoenix's exit to accommodate a large amount of traffic. (That’s another story.) This will only make matters worse at the bottleneck. Buses are also backing up traffic. An argument for a single lane is to provide a bicycle lane. Did the city get a grant for a bicycle lane? Sometimes a grant is not the greatest answer. Has there been a survey lately on traffic vs. bicycle numbers? The few bicyclers that are going through the city are not safe and do not warrant a lane as wide as the traffic lane. The Greenway is being used by many bicyclers that is safe. There is a rumor to increase state gas tax to help pay for more bad ideas. Phoenix traffic problems are only going to get worse in the near future. Larry Ryerson Medford Statistics Statistics show that 57.3 percent of all statistics cited by Mail Tribune reporters are bogus. For example, on Friday, Jan. 22, Tony Bloom reported that “Since 2006, Medford Water Commission wholesale water rates have gone up 90.4 percent.” Reality is more messy and complicated because MWC passes on the cost of water as a small meter fee and separate summer and winter usage charges. The actual increase in the cost of water over the last decade has been about 34 percent. John Dailey Medford Editor's note: a correction was published On Saturday, Jan. 23. What a baby "I don't like Megan Kelly, reporter, Fox News, so I am not going to show up to the next Republican debate"? So how does that play out for this most important U.S. office when meeting our adversaries, or any meeting for that matter, when those at the table may not like you or agree with you? Do you just change your mind and not attend? Good grief, what a baby! Andrea Patterson Medford Make a difference With citizenry comes responsibility, not apathy. Do not be content because you voice your discontent with our government to people who are spectators of our democracy. Be a participant. Sign petitions or create them. Pick up a phone, call your representative's office, write a letter. Remember "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country"? A good start is to become proactive. Find your voice, voice your concerns. One person can make a difference. That person could be you.
