Manwaring signs with Sonoma St. The aches, pains, breaks, bruises and accompanying frustration could have caused Tressa Manwaring to call it quits long ago. But quit isn't among the words in the North Medford senior basketball player's lexicon. Neither a serious junior high volleyball injury that lingered for two years as a back ailment, nor torn ankle ligaments last winter deterred the 6-foot forward-center from pressing on. Her prowess on the basketball court and determination to rehabilitate in the fitness center built Manwaring into a collegiate prospect. On Wednesday she announced that she has signed a letter of intent to NCAA Division II power Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif. "I went to visit and fell in love with the campus, the team and the coach," said Manwaring, who had also drawn interest from Gonzaga, Weber State, Cal-Poly SLO, Humboldt State, Texas Christian, Harvard and Columbia, among others. "It's the perfect match." Manwaring finally escaped the back ailment last year then ripped ligaments in her left ankle that slowed her -- but failed to keep her out of action -- in playoff games against Ashland and Clackamas. "I worked so hard to get over the injuries in the offseason," Manwaring says. "I was in the gym every single day lifting and running, working out for four hours."
