SOC WRESTLING Eagles soar past Panthers Bob Bergen's magic touch continues with the Eagle Point High wrestling program. Bergen's Eagles ran their dual meet record to 6-0 on Thursday night with a 71-3 victory over South Medford. Morgan Edenstrom (103), Derek Jarmelio (119), Mike Lopez (125), Derek Smith (140), Jamie Mannenbach (152), Brett Thomas (160), Evan Pogue (171) and Jason Welch (189) all posted falls for the Eagles. B.J. McFall (130) and Carlos Alvarez (215) added decision wins, and the Eagles padded their point total with three forfeits. "I think one of the reasons we've had some success is because of our preparation," Bergen said. "If you prepare yourself and have some discipline -- on and off the mat -- then you've got a fighting chance." Bergen, who coached the Eagles from 1975-90 and won three state championships, took over the program on a one-year basis while the administration looks for a new coach. Jason Kruggel notched South Medford's lone victory, a 7-4 decision over Brian Hayes at 112. First-year Panthers coach Ken Wharry saw reason to be hopeful. "We had five freshmen in our lineup tonight, and we've got three kids who weren't out there because of injury," Wharry said. "In another two weeks we won't be forfeiting any weights except heavyweight." Along with Kruggel, Wharry was pleased with 171-pound Mike Murphy, who is just recovering from a knee injury, and 140-pound Dave Alonzo, who's recovering from a broken hand he suffered in football. Murphy battled EP's Evan Pogue into the third round before getting pinned. Alonzo sustained a 20-5 loss to Smith at 140. 103 -- Morgan Edenstrom, EP, pinned Ian Rasmussen, 1:34; 112 -- Jason Kruggel, SM, d.
