Charles Everett Nathan, 36, entered not guilty pleas Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to two new felony charges of aggravated first-degree animal abuse. According to an indictment filed Friday by a Jackson County grand jury, the new counts allege Nathan "unlawfully and maliciously" killed and tortured a Jack Russell terrier belonging to the woman. Nathan's court-appointed defense attorney had requested a lower bail at the hearing, but Circuit Judge Kelly Ravassipour kept his bail at $250,000 and added new conditions in the event he comes up with the 10 percent required for his release. If Nathan posts bail, he will be required to pay for electronic monitoring and will be subject to random drug tests. Medford police said Nathan refused to intervene as his three pit bulls attacked the Jack Russell terrier in the 1500 block of Cunningham Avenue, allegedly claiming that pit bulls are "pack animals." After the terrier stopped moving, Nathan reportedly threatened the woman with his dogs, police said. Nathan had pleaded not guilty June 10 to misdemeanor counts of first- and second-degree animal abuse, menacing and felony heroin and meth possession. The three pit bulls are in the possession of Jackson County Animal Services, police said. Nathan's next court appearance will be June 27, Deputy District Attorney Johan Pietila said Friday. Nathan has previous felony convictions for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in 2004 and 2014, meth possession in 2013, and misdemeanor convictions that include fourth-degree assault, second-degree trespassing and providing false information to police.
