Jean was born August 1, 1925 in Lennox (near Inglewood), Calif. to Harmen and Olive (Church) Ton. The second of four children and the only daughter, she grew up in Inglewood, Red Bluff, and Tulare, Calif. She was awarded her B.A. in Education, with a minor in art, at Fresno State College in 1947, and continued her interest in art by completing, in 1980, the Advertising Art and Design program at Farmingdale State University in New York. Jean married Robb Grover in San Leandro, Calif. in 1957. During their 57 years together, they lived in Stony Brook and Setauket, N.Y. until 1993, when Robb retired and they moved to Ashland, Ore. Robb's profession took them overseas twice. In 1975-1976 the family dwelled in Gttingen, Germany where her husband was a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute fr Strmungsforschung. In 1986-1987 they lived in Okazaki, Japan where Robb was visiting professor at the Institute for Molecular Science. Jean founded and chaired the committees for much-needed restoration and expansion of the historic Setauket Presbyterian Church, adding a fellowship hall and new classrooms for the children. She designed the expansion and oversaw its construction through to completion. Using the skills she developed during these projects, she also designed and oversaw the construction of their Ashland home. Jean joined the Ashland Garden Club in 1996 and she headed their scholarship committee, in addition to serving at the Siskiyou District level, for which she helped design the District's logo. She is survived by husband, J. Robb Grover, Ashland, Ore.; son, Jon Grover (Judy), Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter, Patricia Westling (Jeffrey), Kodiak, Alaska; three grandchildren, Grace, Chris, and Cassie Westling, Kodiak, Alaska; brother, Donald Ton (Joyce), Visalia, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert Ton and Allan Ton; and infant daughter, Melissa. Jean's memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, corner of Walker Avenue and Siskiyou Blvd. Pastor Kathy Keener will officiate. A reception will follow in Calvin Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, Ore.
