North Valley Splits with Lakeview MERLIN � North Valley, handcuffed in the first game by one of the Skyline Conference�s top pitchers, rallied in the second game for a split with Mazama in a league-opening baseball doubleheader Saturday. Behind Chris Fairburn�s four-hit pitching and five errors by North Valley, Mazama took the opener, 6-1. The Knights, rapping 12 hits, claimed the second contest, 11-9. "It was good to come back and get the second one," said North Valley coach Mike Reese. "We couldn�t do anything less than a split at home." In the nightcap, the Knights scored four runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead, then added three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. With two outs in the third, consecutive singles by Cory Pedersen, Scott Butterbaugh and Paul Mitchell produced a run. John Gould then ripped a three-run home run, his first of the season, for the lead. North Valley stretched the lead in the fourth with RBI singles from Drew Peterson and Ariah Nead and a sacrifice fly by Paul Mitchell. Aaron Phelps, Peterson, Nead and Mitchell each had two hits. Joe Havely was 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Lakeview. In the first game, Fairburn struck out 10 while allowing four hits and a walk. Any chance the Knights had of staying close ended with the fielding miscues. Only two of Lakeview�s runs were earned off Scott Butterbaugh, who fanned six and walked four in six innings. "Fairburn is as good as we�ll see in the conference," said Reese. "Early in the season, pitching will be ahead of hitting. He was overpowering at times. He�s going to be tough. He�ll shut lots of people down. We hit it hard a few times but right at people. I was pretty happy that we got better as the game went on." Nolan Yocum went 3-for-4 for Lakeview, including a two-run single in the Honkers� three-run third. North Valley is 3-2 overall. HIDDEN VALLEY 3-10, HENLEY 2-9 � At Grants Pass, Tyler Mason hit a game-winning single in the ninth inning of Game 1, and Troy Beard provided a game-winning triple in the nightcap, leading Hidden Valley to a Skyline Conference doubleheader sweep. The Mustangs are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference. Henley took a 9-8 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh of Game 2, but Beard knocked home the tying run with his triple, then scored on an error. The Mustangs loaded the bases in the ninth inning of the opener before Mason ripped the game-winner. Rob Adler had three hits for Hidden Valley in the first game, while Scott Hyde and Mason each added two. Trevor Smith went 3-for-3 in the second game, with Beard adding three hits and Adler two.
