Hidden Valley Boys eye swim trophy CORVALLIS Hidden Valleys boys placed third in the 2000 Class 3A/2A/1A state swimming meet and the Mustangs may once again compete for a trophy as the state championship meet gets underway today. Preliminaries for the 3A/2A/1A schools begin at 8:30 a.m. at Osborn Aquatic Center, while the 4A boys prelims start at 2 p.m. and the girls go at 4 p.m. Saturdays 3A/2A/1A finals begin at 9 a.m. with the 4A finals at 4 p.m. Hidden Valley sophomore Mark Pepitone is seeded No. 3 in the 100-yard butterfly (58.82) and No. 4 in the 200-freestyle (1:56.61) for the Mustangs. Pepitone placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 500 freestyle last year. Hidden Valley junior Lynsey Foree turned in the third-fastest 100 backstroke qualifying mark in last weeks district meets when she was clocked in 1:06.22. In the Class 4A competition, Roseburg is entered in five boys events and nine girls events, but the Southern Oregon Conference champion doesnt have the horse power to compete with the likes of Westview of Beaverton and Sheldon of Eugene in the dash for team trophies. Grants Pass Matt Bisson, who placed fifth in last years 100 backstroke, has a solid shot to make the finals of both the backstroke, where hes seeded No. 5 (55.02) and 100 breaststroke, where he enters No. 6 (1:01.38). South Medfords Ashley Johnson eyes a return to the 100 butterfly finals after placing sixth last winter. But Johnsons 1:01.54 meet in the district finals was just the 15th best qualifying time. The senior turned in a 59.45 effort to place sixth in last years state finals. Ashland junior Brad Scoles is entered in two events and is seeded No. 7 in the 100 freestyle (48.62). Jamie Erickson became North Medfords first qualifier in the state meet since the 1986 North/South split when she won the SOC 200 freestyle. But she will need to cut around eight seconds off her 2:05.02 district mark to place.   Mail Tribune Home | Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. | Dow Jones & Co., Inc. | Privacy | Contact Us Copyright 2001 Mail Tribune, Inc.
