Is there really a Santa Claus? I understand the ones in downtown Medford are supposed to be hidden, but my friends and I spent three hours combing the town, and we could only find eight of the deranged North Pole dwellers! We saw large fellows on motorcycles, a band of bagpipers and even scaled over the wall at the top of the downtown parking garage. We haunted city parks, the Chamber and the bus depot with no luck. None of the merchants with a stealth Santa knew what we were talking about when we asked for an entry form! Is this any way to run a contest? Bah, humbug. Are you sure there are 13 Santas? — Deb S., Medford Yes, Deb, there is a Santa Claus. Woo-hoo! We’ve been wanting to write that for years. Couldn’t you have arranged to have a friend named Virginia write us? We can verify six Santas, the number our crack Since-You-Asked investigators turned up on a quick cruise through town. But 13. Now that you mention it, 13 is suspicious. Have you ever seen a building with a 13th floor? On the other hand, are you sure you’re not just affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age? Yes, Deb, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion and holiday sales exist. How dreary it all would be if there were no Santa Claus! Ah, Deb, in all this town there is nothing else so real and abiding. No Santa Claus!
