Mavericks garner split with Roseburg Jun 24, 2016 12:00 AM A A North Medford used a steady pitching effort by Brady Buchanan and a five-run second inning surge to secure a win in Game 2 and a split of an American Legion A doubleheader against Roseburg Pepsi at North Medford High on Thursday. Buchanan needed 76 pitches to secure a complete-game victory for the Mavericks, allowing five hits with one strikeout and one hit batter in a 7-2 nonleague triumph. North Medford (11-5) is playing an independent schedule this summer and is not part of Area 4 play. Roseburg won the first game 8-2. “Brady basically set the tone for us in that second game and our kids competed behind that,” said North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe. “It’s easier to get in a rhythm defensively and get in a good flow offensively when a pitcher does that by throwing first-pitch strikes and retiring their leadoff hitter like he did.” Ryan Sandoval gave the Mavericks a boost with a two-out, two-run single to highlight a five-run second inning that allowed the host team to take a 6-1 advantage. Sandoval finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 2, while Brandon King was 2-for-3 with three runs. In the opener, Jeremiah Huffman and Buchanan each went 2-for-3 for the Mavericks.
