Louis Frederick Mahar II was arrested on allegations of fourth-degree assault, second-degree disorderly conduct, harassment and sexual harassment. Mahar, 40, of the 4000 block of Crystal Springs Drive in Medford, was lodged at the Jackson County Jail Tuesday night and released on his own recognizance at 3 a.m. Wednesday after he was arrested in relation to alleged incidents at a party last weekend for graduating nursing students at Agate Ridge Vineyard in Eagle Point. Mahar is co-owner of Mahar Brothers Construction Co., which builds residential homes. After three requests Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office on Friday declined to release a police report to the Mail Tribune, saying the case is open and has been referred to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office, a representative said. Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz also declined to release any reports. "We just received the reports this morning," Markiewicz said on Friday. "We'll review the case in the District Attorney's Office next week." Mahar has not been arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court on any charges. The man whom Mahar allegedly assaulted, Shane Bishop, an Emmy award-winning producer for Dateline NBC who lives locally, declined to be interviewed but released a statement Friday. "This was an attack on me that was completely unprovoked. The assailant's aggression was witnessed by many, and as a result, he has been charged with several crimes. Any account to the contrary is total fabrication," Bishop said. In addition to his statement, Bishop said 17 witnesses corroborate his version of events. In an interview Friday, Mahar denied acting in a sexually inappropriate way toward any of the women at the party. Mahar said he asked Bishop's wife to show him were the bathrooms were. When he came back from using a portable toilet at the event, he said Bishop put his hand on Mahar's shoulder and accused Mahar of hitting on Bishop's wife. Mahar said he grabbed Bishop's shirt with two hands, the shirt tore off, Bishop fell and Mahar fell on top of him. Mahar said he was not aware that Bishop had suffered significant injuries, including fractures. Mahar, who has hired local defense attorney Carl Caplan, said he fears the accusations could damage him and his company. "Reputation is everything," he said. "We're going to work to get these charges dismissed." Caplan declined to comment. The Mail Tribune asked to speak to any Agate Ridge Vineyard staff members who were working the night of the nurses' graduation party. A manager said the business would not comment.
