Historical Society executive director stepping down Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 5:26 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 5:26 PM » Social News The Southern Oregon Historical Society's executive director since 2012 is stepping down from the post, citing personal reasons. SOHS President Phil Long made an announcement about Rob Esterlein's decision today. He added the society's board of trustees will meet in the next several weeks to start the process of looking for a new person to fill the vacancy. "At this point, we need to meet and talk through the resources we have," Long said. "We're going to look at our options." Officials said SOHS memberships saw a 30-percent bump under Esterlein, who pushed for a development director position to make that happen. Long said the number of summer programs offered by the Historic Hanley Farm also increased and their quality improved. Those included the Children's Heritage Fair, Living History Days and Origin Dinners, a program that featured presentations of Southern Oregon history paired with food. An uptick in larger exhibits such as "Women In Agriculture" also happened under Esterlein's watch, Long said. Esterlein also helped maintain existing programs, Long added, including the "As It Was" and "Windows in Time" programs, along with "History Made By You," "Holidays At Hanley" and the "Scarecrow Festival." "I think there was a lot of stabilizing of programs while he was here," Long said. "We really have been pleased with his leadership." Esterlein could not be reached for comment.
