Where exactly are the dividing lines? — Tom C., Eagle Point. Bear Creek was the first natural divider of what became the incorporated city of Medford in 1885. However, it is the Oregon and California railroad passing north to south through town that divides streets designated west and east. Main Street, which runs from Black Oak Drive next to Rogue Valley Country Club to the old Jacksonville Highway, separates the city north and south. That makes where Main Street crosses the railroad tracks the center of town. There are other dividers as well, Interstate 5 was built beside and over Bear Creek in the 1960s, adding to the east- west division. The postal service elected to use the freeway to identify east Medford with 97504 and west with 97501 ZIP codes. When a second senior high school was opened in 1986, another north-south line was drawn.
