Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 2, 2006 Local fighter to be featured on TV show The Rogue Valley will once again have a mixed martial arts fighter featured on the reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" when it premieres at 10 p.m. Thursday on Spike TV (Ch. 40). Grants Pass High graduate Josh Haynes is among 16 fighters selected for the show’s third season, with the winners of the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions each earning six-figure contracts with the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization. Former Crater High and Southern Oregon University standout Mike Whitehead was a contestant last season. This season, UFC legends and bitter rivals Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz train and coach the participants. Haynes, 28, studied computer science at SOU and also spent six years in the Army. Over the years, the Medford resident has built a 17-4 record with one knockout and currently trains with Team Quest and UFC fighters Randy Couture and Nate Quarry. He started fighting at 330 pounds but has since dropped over 100 pounds to fight at 215. Making his story that much more unique is the fact that Haynes’ oldest son was diagnosed with brain cancer at birth, and watching his son’s battle to endure multiple surgeries has provided inspiration. Three years ago, Haynes retained his Full Contact Fighting Federation heavyweight title by inducing his foe to tap out in 46 seconds during an event held at the Medford Armory.
