His plane was a Grumman-built "Avenger" torpedo bomber that carried a crew of three. What happened to his crew? — Joe W., Shady Cove Joe, the crew members were captured by the Japanese and never found on Chichi Jima Island in the Pacific. The account of the prison life of eight American Navy and Marine airmen and the rescue of Bush is detailed in the book "The Flyboys," highly recommended by the airpeople in the Since You Asked Military History Squadron. Written by James Bradley, the book makes for grisly reading at times, describing torture and cannibalism. The episode had been kept top secret by Japanese and American governments until Bradley uncovered the information. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
