Author to discuss women's health issues, menopause By SUSAN JAY Scheduled for Friday What : Talk by Dr. John Lee, author of "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" When : 7 p.m. Friday Where : North Medford High School auditorium Tickets : $15 in advance from Health Way Nutrition Center at Medford Center; $20 at the door The popular and sometimes controversial author of the book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" will speak about women's health issues in Medford Friday. Dr. John Lee, a family practice physician for 30 years, is retired and now teaches medical professionals and lay audiences about hormone imbalances and health. Lee's popular book on menopause has sold more than half a million copies, and he has talked to audiences all over the world. His book talks about the use of natural progesterone as a safe hormonal supplement for menopause symptoms and other problems related to hormone imbalances. His second book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-menopause," is aimed at women between 30 and 50. Lee, who lives in Sebastopol, Calif., will speak on a variety of women's health issues Friday, including pre-menopause, menopause, breast cancer, hysterectomies and other related issues. "Dr. Lee is not influenced by the powerful economic-driven pharmaceutical companies," said Lori Hagemaier, a Medford nurse responsible for inviting Lee to speak. Pharmaceutical companies put a positive spin on the information they send to physicians about their drugs, Hagemaier said. And many physicians, due to lack of time, receive a lot of their post-doctorate education on drugs from pharmaceutical companies, she said. Hagemaier, 34, said she suffered from severe mood swings, painful premenstrual symptoms and memory problems before reading and following Lee's recommendation to use natural progesterone cream. She didn't want to take synthetic medications or continue taking estrogen. She said she is finally free of her symptoms because of the information in Lee's book. "It's changed my life," she said. Hagemaier has been giving seminars locally on Lee's book and also hosted two radio talk shows on KDOV-FM, where Lee was available by phone to answer questions from listeners. She has also been working with women who want to follow Lee's hormone balancing program and has become a distributor for Progest Natural Progesterone Cream, one of many brands now on the market. Lee also will share proceeds from his talk to help Hagemaier and her husband, Dave, with the cost of adopting a baby from China. The adoption will cost about $17,000. The Hagemaiers have two children and are working with the international Holt adoption organization. Dave Hagemaier, an elementary school teacher, is adopted himself and has always thought about returning the gift by helping another child without parents.
