Martin Thomas Ferrero, 26, was charged in Linn County Circuit Court on Tuesday with murdering his father, Thomas Paul Ferrero, 64, a geologist who had lived and worked in Ashland for 25 years before moving to Albany. Albany Police Department Detective Lt. Travis Giboney said that when officers arrived at the home, they talked to the son at the front door. "He was covered in blood. He surrendered himself," Giboney added. Officers then found the father dead on the living room floor. Martin Ferrero had been drinking, Giboney said, and authorities are checking his blood and urine for drugs. "I don't know what makes you do something like that," Giboney added. "He didn't talk a whole lot to us. ... He didn't deny it or didn't offer an explanation." Albany Police Department responded to the Ferrero residence, 6070 Carrol Place S.W., at 6:55 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 hang-up call. During Tuesday's arraignment hearing, Prosecutor George Eder argued for no bail in the case because of the nature of the charge, and Judge Daniel Murphy granted the request. Ferrero appeared for his arraignment in Linn County Circuit Court via teleconference from the Linn County Jail. Detectives are continuing to investigate the case, and the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office, in coordination with the Linn County District Attorney’s Office and Albany police, also conducted an autopsy Tuesday. The Ferreros lived off a cul-de-sac in a quiet neighborhood near Linn-Benton Community College. The father and son didn’t draw attention to themselves with any suspicious activity or partying, Mariah Downer, who lives on Carrol Place, said. “It’s pretty surprising. Nothing like that ever happens here,” Downer said. The elder Ferrero recently was named the assistant director of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries’ Mineral Land Reclamation program. The agency released a brief statement about the killing: “Our thoughts are with Tom’s family, and all those who knew and loved him. Our team was just beginning to get to know Tom, and we are saddened by this tragedy.” Thomas Ferrero took over his new job Jan. 20. He spent the six years previous with the California Department of Conservation’s Office of Mine Reclamation, where he had managed the Compliance and Engineering Geology Units. Before that, Ferrero spent 25 years as a consulting engineering, mining and groundwater geologist based in Ashland, according to a press release obtained by the Corvallis Gazette-Times.   During that time, Martin Ferrero played on the Ashland Little League team, where his father was a coach. The next hearing for Martin Ferrero is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 9, and an early resolution conference was set for 8:30 a.m. March 18.
