Mail Tribune 100, March 11, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 11, 1916 ASHLAND WINS CHAMPIONSHIP OF SOUTHERN OREGON Ashland won the championship of southern Oregon last night, by a score of 18 to 16. It was the third straight game of the series, the others being 7-6 and 14-8. The Medford girls' team took the championship away from Ashland by a score of 9-7. Three games have been played, Medford winning two and tying one, and so if Ashland wins tonight they cannot tie the Medford team. Grisez, of Ashland, with the assistance of Delsman, won the game for Ashland. The former scored basket after basket at almost impossible angles. Once he shot the entire length of the floor and scored a perfect goal. It was marvelous shooting, so miraculous that it seemed impossible, unbelievable. Delsman scored the last basket for our opponents and it was from beyond center. Medford outplayed them, out guarded them, but Ashland simply overwhelmed them with luck that came in avalanches. The girls' game was a hummer and the crowd was stirred up to wild enthusiasm by the clever, swift work of the girls. It was a fast, hard game. Every girl on the Medford team starred. Moore, of Ashland, was their one best bet, but English took care of her. The crowd was fully as largest as last time and the rooting was great. Medford sprang a surprise in an Indian war dance rooters' song. DR. BATES LECTURES ON NEXT FRIDAY Next Friday evening, March 17, Dr. Bates, who occupies the chair of English at the University of Oregon, will be here in Medford at the invitation of the Drama League Center, to deliver the last lecture in the Center's course for the season. His talk will be on the drama, presenting his own dramatic works in connection with his subject. Dr. Bates is a man of broad and choice culture and magnetic personality and we are fortunate indeed to have this opportunity to come in contact with him in so delightful a way. As usual, the lecture will be free and all are cordially invited to attend. It will be given at the Hotel Holland and will begin promptly at 8 o'clock.
