PORTLAND Police suspend inquiry into assault at Portland college Alleged victim says he already forgives his attackers Comment By Steven DuBois The Associated Press MailTribune.com By Steven DuBois The Associated Press Posted Dec. 15, 2015 at 5:21 PM Updated Dec 15, 2015 at 5:23 PM By Steven DuBois The Associated Press Posted Dec. 15, 2015 at 5:21 PM Updated Dec 15, 2015 at 5:23 PM » Social News PORTLAND — The investigation into an assault at an Oregon college is over for now because the student who reported it does not want to press charges, police said Tuesday. Tanguy Muvuna, a 26-year-old from Rwanda, told police on Nov. 21 that he was attacked by three white men who shouted racial slurs. He said he was able to break free and return home without serious injury. The reported assault happened at Lewis & Clark College a few days after racist comments were posted on a social media site. Both incidents led to protests and a sit-in at the small college in southwest Portland, with students saying they wanted a more diverse faculty and improved security. Detectives suspended the case because the student does not want to be involved with the investigation or the prosecution if the suspects are arrested, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau. Muvuna made it known three weeks ago that he wasn't interested in prosecution, telling fellow students in a crowded lecture hall that he forgives his attackers. "I don't have time to hate people," he said. "I have time to love them." Detectives spoke with Muvuna numerous times and interviewed others, too, Simpson said. They have been unable to identify any suspects, he said. "At this point, there is no further investigating for detectives to conduct without new information," Simpson wrote in emailed statement. The suspects were described as young men, all around 5-foot-8 with medium builds. Simpson said the department's bias crime division also was not able to identify whoever was responsible for the offensive posts on social media.
