BRITT CLASSICAL FESTIVAL 2015 'Epic' season Music Director Teddy Abrams announces ambitious lineup By Bill Varble Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Bill Varble Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 5, 2015 @ 7:00 pm By Bill Varble Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 5, 2015 @ 7:00 pm » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Britt Music Director Teddy Abrams says he's pulling out all the stops for the 2015 Classical Festival. "It's pretty epic," he says of an ambitious program that reaches way beyond the usual "three Bs" of Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. "I thought we should really stretch ourselves and show what the orchestra can do." Abrams, who in his day job conducts the Louisville Orchestra, was in town Thursday for Britt's classical announcement. He spoke during a break from rehearsing for a performance Thursday evening with Britt musicians Conrad Jones and Jim Decker. The classical season, the festival that got Britt started, runs this year from July 31 through Aug. 15 and encompasses a wide spectrum of music. Abrams and the Britt Orchestra will kick off the season at 8 p.m. July 31 with the world premiere of a short piece by Abrams called "Visceral" that he composed for a small jazz group but hasn't orchestrated yet. "It's a short fanfare to start the season," he says. The centerpiece of the evening promises to be Orff's "Carmina Burana," for which Abrams is bringing together the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, the Rogue Valley Chorale and members of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. "It's accessible in a smart, engaging way," he says of the work. "People recognize it when they hear it." Guest Hugh Russell, a baritone, has performed the work with major symphony orchestras from around the nation. The highlight on Aug. 1 will be Stravinsky's huge "The Rite of Spring," for which Abrams is bringing together more than 100 musicians. He believes it is the largest number of classical players ever assembled on the Britt stage. The concert's guest artists, the Dover Quartet, include Ashland native and cellist Camden Shaw. Aug. 7 will be a night of Americana, with pieces that draw from folk and traditional music, including Copland's "Suite from Billy the Kid." The next night's show will pair Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" with American composer Samuel Barber's "Second Essay," performed by Abrams' own chamber group, the Sixth Floor Trio. The trio is a chamber group formed by Abrams and two pals dedicated to connecting musical styles and communities. It has performed in spaces from the Kennedy Center to grunge bars. Abrams plays piano and clarinet. He says this year he's trying to give audiences the feeling of an integrated festival environment, or taking a musical journey that has a trajectory. "You'll see an interplay between concerts," he says. One thread is Barber, who will pop up again when violinist James Ehnes is the symphony's guest Aug. 14 to perform Barber's Violin Concerto. "He's extremely charismatic," Abrams says of Ehnes. "Audiences are moved by his performances." The season will conclude Aug. 15 with a Romantic/Impressionist evening of works by Connesson, Debussy, Dukas and Ravel. Britt's annual, family-friendly Symphony Pops, planned for Sunday, Aug. 9, is an all-Bernstein program featuring excerpts from "West Side Story," "On the Town" and more. Special guest will be vocalist Morgan James, a Juilliard product who shifted her focus from classical to pop and has had prominent roles in "The Addams Family," "Godspell," Berry Gordy’s "Motown The Musical" and other Broadway shows. Her debut album, "Morgan James Live," released in 2012, was a celebration of singer Nina Simone. Symphony Pops seats cost $15 and $5. For other concerts, reserved seats cost $45, lawn seating $32, child and student lawn seats $10. Student and other passes are also available. Concerts are at 8 p.m. (except for Symphony Pops, which begins at 7:30 p.m.). Visit brittfest.org or call 541-779-0847. Reach Medford freelance writer Bill Varble at [email protected] .
