Letters, June 12 By Mail Tribune readers Updated: Jun 13, 2022 12:06 PM A A Offended by Merkley I am offended by Sen. Jeff Merkley’s recent newsletter entitled “Done with thoughts and prayers.” Since he represents all Oregonians, then why does he choose to insult thousands of Oregonians by insulting prayer? Does he not realize that “thoughts and prayers” has been the wellspring for innumerable programs that have bettered the lives of all Oregonians? Is he so proud that he refuses to acknowledge his need for divine guidance? If Merkley is done with thoughts and prayers, then I am done with Merkley. Arthur Ohare Medford OSF no longer what it was I am writing this letter to voice my extreme disappointment for the new direction Oregon Shakespeare Festival has taken. OSF was once a worldwide Ashland treasure that brought people from near and far but now it has changed it’ standards to an all-time low. Known for outstanding presentations of classical Shakespeare plays and musicals, the current offerings of OSF now exhibit a new woke agenda. How very sad! As a loyal supporter and donor of OSF for 40-plus years, I am heartbroken! All the people who have benefited from years of learning and enjoyment, including my four children and one grandchild, are now deprived of the opportunity to bring a new generation to OSF. I hope others will join me in asking for a return to the once original purpose and presentations of Angus Bowmer and the original Ashland Shakespeare Theatre! Erla Goller Sacramento, California Column contained an error Cal Thomas’s June 6 column on gun safety began with an error. He wrote, “Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Thermodynamics states: ‘For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.’” Isaac Newton formulated the laws of motion. In 1824, nearly 100 years after Newton’s death in 1727, thermodynamics began when Sadi Carnot published “Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire.” Thomas meant Newton’s Third Law of Motion.
