Grants Pass councilor sentenced for DUII Tuesday Jan 24, 2017 at 4:52 PM Jan 24, 2017 at 4:52 PM By Chris Bristol Grants Pass Daily Courier Barry Eames, who was elected to the Grants Pass City Council on Nov. 8, was sentenced Monday to five days in custody for drunken driving. Eames, 70, also was placed on two years of unsupervised probation and had his driver's license suspended for one year as part of his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of DUII — standard terms for a first-time offender. The charge stemmed from a crash on Sept. 17 in the Redwood area of Grants Pass. According to police reports, witnesses saw a red Cadillac Escalade collide with a utility box while making a turn at Willow Lane and Redwood Avenue. The Escalade was later located at Redwood Park, and a piece of bumper recovered at the crash site was a match. Eames was found passed out behind the wheel. He was unable to perform roadside sobriety tests, and was cleared at the hospital three hours later. His blood-alcohol level was 0.24 percent, three times the legal limit to drive. Eames, a retired property appraiser, was running at the time for a seat on the City Council. After issuing a public apology, he stayed in the race and was elected in November over opponent Ron Schutz. For his plea to the DUII charge, prosecutors dismissed additional charges of reckless driving and a form of hit-and-run involving only property damage. Under the standard terms of a first-time DUII offense, the court said Eames' custody could be changed from jail time to other alternative sanctions, such as house arrest or work crew. Eames also was ordered to pay $2,370 in fines and fees, complete a treatment program and attend a victim's impact panel.
