Central Point voters will find their ballots in their mailboxes as early as Saturday and have until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, to cast their votes. In the race for Position 3, author and longtime board member Case will face stay-at-home mom and part-time undergraduate student Dawn Copple. Case, who has a bachelor’s degree in communication from Southern Oregon University, has served on the Central Point School Board since 1994, including four years as board chair. Case said she has been with the board long enough to know what works and what doesn't. She's especially proud of the work that's been done by the board and school district to provide college scholarships for all graduates and to implement the new dual-language program at Jewett Elementary School. "Change for the sake of change isn't good," she said. "We need to be purposeful in our goals." Copple, who has been a Gold Hill resident for eight years, has an associate degree in social work and is working toward her bachelor’s in marriage and family studies from Brigham Young University-Idaho. She has three children, including one at Patrick Elementary School and one at Hanby Middle School. Copple’s own experiences as a parent have informed her agenda, which includes establishing an open line of communication with teachers, parents and taxpayers; encouraging more parents to get involved in their child’s education; and educating parents on the Common Core State Standards so they are better equipped to help their children. And above all, Copple said she wants to see teachers get the resources they need. “I know we have a limited budget and state funding, and I realize our district has had to make some difficult decisions over the years, but I think there is a need to scrutinize our spending along the way to ensure we are making the best decisions for our teachers and schools,” she said. In the race for Position 5, incumbent and Edward Jones financial adviser Lindbloom will once again challenge District 6 retiree Salmon. Lindbloom was appointed to the position in October 2012 following the death of longtime board member Kerry Bradshaw and defeated Salmon in the 2013 district election to finish out the remainder of Bradshaw’s term, ending June 30, 2015. A South Medford High School graduate, Lindbloom joined the Army National Guard in high school and later transferred to a military intelligence unit in Utah, where he earned his associate degree in criminal justice and bachelor’s degree in business management from Utah Valley University. He also is in the process of earning his master's degree in business administration from Concordia University. Of his four children, two attend Jewett Elementary School, one attends Scenic Middle School and one attends Crater High School. Lindbloom said he would like to address inconsistencies in the way curriculum is being implemented districtwide, the number of teachers on special assignment and not in the classroom, and the district’s method for evaluating teachers and administrators, which currently doesn't officially take into account parent feedback. Lindbloom said his knowledge of the municipal bond market will be an asset to the district if it decides to pursue a bond measure in the near future to cover the costs of some much-needed facility repairs and improvements. A school board, he added, should be made up of impartial community members who can bring fresh ideas to the table. “And it’s hard to give impartial input if you've been ingrained in the school system as an employee forever,” he said, alluding to Salmon’s 38 years as the district’s human resources secretary.  Salmon grew up in Central Point, and she, her husband and both her children graduated from Crater High School. “Now I want to give back to the community that has given so much to my family and I,” she said. Salmon retired from full-time employment in 2010 but continued working part-time for the district until 2012. Although she said she doesn't have “an agenda,” Salmon said she is concerned about declining enrollment and would like to think of ways to make public schools more inviting to families who are pursuing a private or alternative education. But other than that, Salmon said she is proud of District 6 and wants to help maintain its good reputation. “Our district has done really well scoring on the state report card and with its graduation rate,” she said. “And I would just love to see the graduation rates increase in the way they have been.” Salmon has been endorsed by the Central Point Education Association.
