The Panthers (3-0, 1-0 SWC) scored on their first three possessions to take a 19-0 lead with 7:42 left in the second quarter. The South Medford touchdowns came on Blake Snyder’s 5-yard run and a 3-yard rush from Josh Hall in the opening quarter and Hudson Thomas’ 4-yard carry in the second period. “Our kids played well in the first half,” said South Medford coach Bill Singler, “but not with the same emotion like in the last two games. That’s to be expected after the two big wins we had.” Quarterback Craig Contreras hooked up with Brayden Massey for a 10-yard TD pass 25 seconds before halftime to give South a 25-6 lead. Makai Manuwai accounted for both Panther touchdowns in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 37-6. Manuwai scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards. The final South touchdown came when Kody Burton recovered a Wolverine fumble in the end zone. “We controlled the defensive front and had a balanced game offensively,” said Singler, who pointed to excellent performances by Foley Wheeler, Will Cooney and Manuwai on the defensive line. Contreras was 15 of 21 passing for 193 yards. The senior had one touchdown and one interception. Massey was South’s leading receiver with seven catches for 90 yards and David Garcia hauled in three passes for 61 yards. The Panthers rushed for 165 yards, with Thomas pacing the ground game with 65 yards on 14 carries. South Medford; 13 12 12 6 — 43 Willamette; 0 6 0 0 — 6 GRANTS PASS 38, SHELDON 34: At Eugene, Grants Pass withstood a fourth-quarter surge by Sheldon to edge the Irish in a Southwest Conference showdown. The Cavemen (3-0, 1-0 SWC) rumbled for 321 yards rushing, led by Zachary Hannan, who ran for 156 and a 44-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Keegan Weiss added a pair of rushing touchdowns and quarterback Javan Appling threw for 175 and a score on 17 of 26 passing. Appling also ran for 69 yards. Sheldon’s Kellen Strahm scored four touchdowns, two on receptions, then he brought the Irish (2-1, 0-1 SWC) back with a couple of rushing TDs in the fourth quarter. He had eight receptions for 100 yards to go with 32 rushing yards and 23 yards passing. Moges Dinkins made three field goals for the Cavemen. For Ashland (3-0), Max Montgomery had two interceptions and an 80-yard touchdown catch on the first play from scrimmage, Ryne Robitz rushed for 119 yards and the defense held Summit’s highly touted offense scoreless in the second half. The Storm outgained Ashland 365 yards to 337, but the Grizzlies’ ball-hawking defense more than made up the difference, picking off Summit quarterback John Bledsoe three times and recovering two fumbles. Bledsoe is the son of former NFL star Drew Bledsoe. Ashland quarterback completed 12 of 20 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and also ran for 29 yards. Robitz scored twice, and Montgomery and Parker Layton combined for six catches, 149 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Ashland also had sacks by Colin McGuire, Wyatt Ireland and Michael Pruitt. VIEW 40, CRATER 34: At Central Point, time expired on Crater as it tried to rally in the fourth quarter against Mt. View in nonleague play at Dutch Meyer Field. After the Comets (1-2) found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to slice Mt. View’s lead to 40-34, the Comets had a drive fizzle out and their final possession ended on an incomplete pass as time expired. Dylan Morgan caught four passes for 90 yards and hauled in the Comets’ final touchdown, a 25-yarder from quarterback Matt Struck. The Comets received two rushing touchdowns from Cavin Gillispie and another from Tommy Winningham, who led their ground attack with nine carries for 95 yards. Mt. View quarterback Mike Irwin ran for 146 yards and a touchdown and had two TD passes. Cody Anthony added a pair of rushing touchdowns. Mt. Bend (2-1) amassed 422 yards in offense to 160 for Eagle Point (0-3). Eagle Point quarterback Ra’eed Sowell was 14 of 23 passing for 107 yards and had a team-best 16 yards rushing.
