At the close of Tuesday's council meeting, Lewis called up council members Bill Leep, Dean Paddison and Doris Crofoot. Leep's proclamation thanked him for eight years of service, and also tweaked the verbally adept councilman. "Whereas, during his tenurial epoch, Councilor Leep has elucidated every oral exchange with a fresh compendium of lexicographical marvels that have never failed to produce prodigious wonderment in all personages within auditory proximity," Lewis read. "That was a good one," said Leep on Friday. Leep added he has enjoyed serving the community during his eight years on council and 12 years on the city's planning commission. However, he said there is still much to do in Jacksonville. "I feel like we barely touched things," he said. "It seems like we can't conquer inertia." Advertisement Paddison, known for his history of voting against fees and taxes, was likewise pranked for his eight years. "The taxpayers of Jacksonville appreciate Councilor Paddison's fiscal conservation and penny-pinching," Lewis read, handing Paddison an unframed certificate on recycled paper. Paddison admits he is against taxes, but insists he is not a "penny-pincher." "That has a negative connotation," he said, laughing. "I approved $85,000 for the city's skate park, and I did support the (public safety) surcharge." Paddison said he retrieved his formal proclamation from city offices today. The objectionable "penny-pinching" phrase had been removed, he said. Crofoot has served the city the longest. Originally hired in 1972 as city recorder/treasurer, Crofoot has spent the past eight years on the council, usually sharing her chair with her poodle-mix, Lucy. "Whereas, Lucy has requested to stay home on Tuesday nights ..." Lewis from her proclamation. "She's very smart," Crofoot said of her dog. Much has changed in Jacksonville since she applied for the recorder position more than 25 years ago after reading a blurb in the Mail Tribune, Crofoot said. "I read a little thing in the Mail Tribune that someone had absconded with city funds," said Crofoot. Crofoot said her husband suggested she apply for the vacated position. "He said 'You're not working. Why don't you do it?' " she said. Crofoot performed her duties as the city's clerk for five years after being hired at a pay rate of $450 a month.
