Dead woman identified, from Ashland Jackson County sheriff's detectives positively identified a woman Wednesday whose body was discovered floating in Emigrant Lake on Monday afternoon. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Mary Anne Scarr, 42, of 1301 Iowa St. in Ashland, Detective Dan Hobbs said. Scarr's body was discovered at 1:48 p.m. Monday in the northeast corner of the lake near Emigrant Dam. Scarr's former co-worker, who works at the Ashland Community Food Store, recognized a composite sketch published Tuesday and contacted detectives. Police found Scarr's family in Ashland, which included a 14-year-old daughter, mother and sister. A positive match was made using fingerprints, Hobbs said. Family members told police that Scarr left home with friends from Portland on Sunday to attend a party at Emigrant Lake. The group "went their separate ways," Hobbs said, but Scarr never returned. Her family did not report her missing, he added. It's possible Scarr committed suicide, Hobbs said. "She was a substance abuser, alcohol and drugs. She was said to have been suffering from depression," he added. "It's very unfortunate." Foul play does not appear to be a factor, Hobbs said. An autopsy and toxicology screening will be performed today at 9 a.m. to determine the cause of death. The autopsy, originally scheduled for Tuesday and then Wednesday, has been delayed because the medical examiner has been on call to testify in a federal court case.
