He will feature English renaissance music by John Dowland played on the renaissance lute. Rogers will be joined by his wife, recorderist Nancy Elliott, for Italian renaissance duets by Orlando Di Lasso, played on electric guitar and recorder. In addition to his teaching chores at Southern Oregon University, Rogers is a lutenist and guitarist with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Terra Nova Consort. He made his European debut at the Tage Alter und Neuer Musik Regensburg 2000 Festival, displaying a technique the Lute Society of America has called "formidable." His solo and ensemble performances have been heard on National Public Radio, including the programs "Performance Today" and "Harmonia." Dowland was a contemporary of Shakespeare who wrote moody, introspective works that became well-known all over Europe, particularly after publication of his "First Booke of Songes or Ayres" in 1597. Advertisement Lute music often was used to accompany poems, with the feel of the music following the poem. Lute songs were typically short, with simple chords and the emphasis on vocals. Dowland also wrote instrumental lute music. Rogers will turn to the classical guitar to play music by the American improvisational jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz and one of his own recent compositions. Rogers has recorded for the Dorian, Callisto and Focus labels and has given recitals and master classes throughout North America, including performances and classes at the San Francisco Conservatory and the University of Southern California. He also has performed with the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, with flutist Vieri Bottazzini and in the ensemble Duo Ruggiero. He studied historical plucked strings with Hopkinson Smith and Eugen Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. The Washington Post has praised his solo improvisational playing as "astonishingly florid."
