http://www.omniture.com --> Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend May 4, 2006 Rural rollover spills fuel, injures driver By Anita Burke Mail Tribune A fuel truck carrying diesel for a timber company operating near Grants Pass tumbled nearly 100 feet down an embankment by Greens Creek Wednesday morning, spilling several hundred gallons of fuel. The crash injured the driver of the Spalding & Son truck and briefly trapped him inside the truck's cab, Josephine County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Randy Lucas said. James Leroy Beed, 68, a Grants Pass resident and Spalding & Son employee, was driving the aging truck with 1,500 gallons of diesel on board. As he went up a steep section of a private logging road off the end of Greens Creek Road at about 7 a.m. Wednesday, the truck's engine died, Lucas said. The truck rolled backwards and Beed was unable to stop or steer it. It careened off the road, tumbling toward the creek. It came to rest about 150 to 200 feet from the water, Lucas estimated. Beed was trapped in the cab with two broken legs, Lucas said. Rural/Metro Fire Department and American Medical Response secured the teetering truck and extricated Beed. He was taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital in fair condition, Lucas said. The timber company hired a Philomath company, Northwest Firefighters, to contain and clean up the spill, said Department of Environmental Quality spokeswoman Jennifer Boudin. DEQ officials monitored the work Wednesday and Spalding & Sons' workers assisted. Boudin said an estimated 100 to 200 gallons of diesel spilled onto the soil and some seeped down to the creek. A boulder blocked access to where the fuel entered the creek, so crews placed booms a short way downstream to prevent the oil slick from spreading, she said. Crews pumped the remaining fuel from the truck Wednesday afternoon so they could right it and pull it back onto the logging road, Boudin said.
