Thompson tosses no-hitter as Mustangs romp By Mail Tribune staff Jun 17, 2022 07:46 PM A A ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs bounced back from a rare early season loss in big fashion Friday morning. Owen Thompson didn’t allow a hit and the Mustangs used a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 10-0 win in five innings over Bend Boss Baseball at the Roseburg Father’s Day Tournament. Thompson faced just three batters over the minimum in his five-inning no-hitter. Pitching to contact and letting his defense work behind him more than anything, Thompson finished with three strikeouts and two walks while also hitting a batter. He retired eight of the first nine batters he faced and didn’t allow any of the three Bend batters that reached base to get into scoring position. The Mustangs (6-2) recorded seven of their 11 hits Friday in the 10-run fifth inning. On top of that, seven of the 10 runs were scored with two outs, as the Mustangs were able to get the win via mercy rule on an RBI single from Cameron Sewell. Medford opened the scoring when Frankie Rutigliano reached on an error, then doubled their lead on Cody Borraggine’s groundout to second. Sewell pushed the lead to 3-0 on his first RBI single of the inning. That’s when the floodgates opened. Jace Miller, Jeremiah Robbins, Rutigliano and Borraggine all had RBI singles before Sewell’s second run-scoring hit of the inning ended it. Sewell finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Borraggine was 2-for-4 with two RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Robbins and Rutigliano also recorded a pair of RBIs. The Mustangs continue tournament play against the Salem Withnell Dodgers at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
