The moves were announced following the departure of Heather Stafford, who joined Business Oregon last month. SVTG begins accepting applications April 15 for its 2015 Accelerator Cohort on its website (http://sustainablevalley.technology). The application deadline is July 1. The accelerator program runs August through October. Three of the six 2014 companies were part of the Hatch Oregon launch in January, where Oregon residents could invest in local businesses. Prior to moving into his new role with the accelerator, Bowling was a member of its Mentors Advisory Group. "I'm really building on the good work that Heather has done," Bowling said. "My role will be building and creating support for participating entrepreneurs that leads to more access to capital. Part of that, he said, is finding more creative ways for people to invest in those companies. "Based on what we've found in previous years," he said, "for younger start-up companies, the primary skills needed include negotiation, finance and presentation skills, as well as emotional intelligence skills where you are constantly aware of your audience and how you have to come across to have a better chance to get the result you want." After two accelerator rounds have shown what practices are most effective, Bowling said. The organization is also changing its mentoring program so that community mentors are paired directly with a company rather than meeting as a group. "This will increase accountability for participants," Bowling said. "Experiences need to be linked. You get feedback, you try something and you come back and make adjustments. Those adjustments are what accelerate growth and learning." Prior to moving to the Rogue Valley from Orange County in Southern California in 2008, Bowling led start-up business development and general management of Silverado At Home. That followed his tenure as chief learning officer for Silverado Senior Living. Before that, he was a principal partner and clinical director of Advanced Behavioral Care. Bowling's Sustainable Leadership Consultants organization works with individuals and teams, developing organization, strategy and leadership skills. He has clients in New York, Omaha, Neb., and Los Angeles, as well as the Rogue Valley. Among his local clients are Pacific Retirement Services, Ashland Partners, Snapshot and Rogue Credit Union. Shaw will handle day-to-day communications and event planning for the nonprofit, based at 100 E. Main St. in Medford. She is a recent graduate of Southern Oregon University's MBA program. Shaw's MBA group worked on a project for the Oregon Employment Department, researching employee benefits offered by Jackson County's arts, entertainment and recreation companies.
