The 75-year-old Hay suffered spinal fractures and other, minor injuries after being involved in a multiple-vehicle accident. During racing action that night, a car hit Hay's vehicle from behind while attempting to dodge another car in front of them, Hay said. The impact knocked Hay into a vehicle that was passing, and Hay's car flipped several times, he said. Bruised and swollen, Hay remained in an intensive care unit at Enloe Medical Center until April 3. A few days later he came home, where he now walks wearing a neck brace. "I'm really lucky I'm around still," Hay said. A two-time main event winner last season at Southern Oregon Speedway, Hay has set records as the oldest driver in White City and at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka. With the help of Hay's racing sponsor, Jim Nelson, Southern Oregon Speedway raised $700 for Hay. Dwarf car drivers' entry fees on opening night were donated after Nelson offered to fund a 15-lap $1,000-to-win race. Silver Dollar raised an additional $500, and a GoFundMe account (gofundme.com/hyx6x5vz) has generated $1,385. "That was really neat," Hay said, adding that he still has many unpaid bills associated with the accident. Hay started racing competitively in 1962, three years after graduating from Eagle Point High. He competed in the NASCAR Winston West Series for several seasons. In 2003, Hay was named the dwarf car rookie of the year at Southern Oregon Speedway. Through the adversity, Hay keeps a sense of humor and remains optimistic. "I wanted to try to win a championship this year, but got started on the wrong foot," he said. "My doctor told me very sternly he would let me know (when I can race again).
