The adopted budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year is nearly $192.8 million, up $4.3 million from the current fiscal year's budget of almost $188.5 million. In a budget message, Medford School District Superintendent Brian Shumate — who took the helm in 2014 — said the district fails to graduate approximately one in three students on time and must do a better job. He said the district will work to help students find connections, meaning and understanding in their daily school lives. Employees will receive a 3 percent increase in pay for the coming fiscal year, in addition to any raises triggered by time and experience on the job. Here are some of the costs of the student success programs planned for the coming fiscal year. Full-day kindergarten $3.95 million Full-day kindergarten at all 14 of the district's elementary schools will allow students to get a full, rigorous academic start to school, district officials said. Costs include new staff, modular buildings, furniture, supplies and curriculum. Medford Prep Program $200,000 to $400,000 The program will help eighth-grade students struggling with academic, attendance and behavior issues gain skills so they can successfully transition to high school. Two to four full-time equivalent teachers will be reassigned to the program, and there may be some minor materials and furniture costs, district officials said. Bulldogs to Raiders Program $19,000 to $24,000 Eighth-grade Latino students at McLoughlin Middle School and their parents will explore educational opportunities at Southern Oregon University in an effort to increase awareness about college. Parents will be offered bilingual services and a chance to improve their English language skills. SOU students will mentor the middle school kids. Funding covers part of one person's pay, supplies and transportation. Extended Day Learning Programs $300,000 Free academic support, meals, transportation, art, music, technology and physical activities will be provided to 60-100 students until 6 p.m. at Howard, Washington and Roosevelt Elementary schools.
