Airport officials reported an 18-foot helium balloon attached to dry ice spreaders will be released, then rise to 500 feet above the ground where the spreaders will release the substance. "If the conditions are right, the moisture in the fog attaches to the dry ice particles as it falls to the surface, which improves visibility sufficiently enough at the approach end of the runway (near Vilas Road) for aircraft to land and take off," an airport news release says. The operation, conducted between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the airport tower's operational days, has been dubbed "CASPER," an acronym for Cable Attached System Providing Effective Release. Motorists near the airport are advised to use caution, as seeding operations could make roads close to the airport slick. That said, airport officials said there is typically very little drift during seeding operations.
