SOU relay team sets school mark SAN FRANCISCO � The Southern Oregon University men�s 400-meter relay team set a school record in winning the event at the Johnny Mathis Open track meet at San Francisco State University Saturday. The time of 41.86 seconds was just one-hundredth of a second off the NAIA national qualifying mark. Team members were Andy Greenwood, Eric McKenzie, Eric Bixler and Jon Schumacher. "They will only get better," Southern Oregon assistant coach Mike Jones said. McKenzie also was a part of a third-place performance on the 1,600-relay team. Nick Dunn, Danny Hanes and Cailen McNair were other members of the team that posted a season-best time of 3:19.9. Dunn, a former North Medford High standout, turned in an outstanding effort in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Dunn finished second at 54.3, while SOU�s Joe Sheire placed fourth at 54.91. Raider junior Nicole Robertson won the women�s discus with a season-best throw of 141-3. Robertson took third in the shot put (40-11�). Kena Page of Cave Junction finished second in the women�s long jump (17-6). In the women�s 5,000 meters, Helen Rarick placed fourth (18:58.5) and teammate Leanna Bernard was fifth (19:00.9). Other SOU men placers were Greenwood in the 100 (sixth, 11.03) and Jeff Bentley in the javelin (fourth, 184-0). "Pretty much across the board, the kids are improving," said Jones. "That�s what you look for at this time of year." Tennis OLYMPIA, Wash. � Southern Oregon University tennis player Julie Nelson ran her school-record winning streak to 13 as the Raiders routed Evergreen State College, 9-0. The contest against the overmatched Geoducks � they forfeited three singles and two doubles matches � was the last one for SOU before the NAIA Region I tournament April 27-28. Nelson (13-0), a junior from Grants Pass, defeated Molly Erickson, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 2 singles. The Raiders (11-2) won all 36 games in singles against Evergreen State, which had only three players.
