Dorothy Isabelle Murphy Bayliss Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 22, 2015 at 8:06 AM Updated May 22, 2015 at 8:07 AM Posted May. 22, 2015 at 8:06 AM Updated May 22, 2015 at 8:07 AM » Social News Dorothy Isabelle Murphy Bayliss Dorothy Isabelle Murphy Bayliss was born January 28, 1922 in San Francisco, Calif. to Edward Francis Murphy and Loretta Cull Murphy, both second generation San Franciscans. Dorothy attended San Francisco schools graduating from academically elite Lowell High School at age 16. She attended the new San Francisco State University in Pre-Med and attended the ground breaking ceremonies for some of the university buildings while a college student. Dorothy was a fashion model, skilled ice skater, tennis player, golfer, swimmer, and an avid baseball fan. Both her father and brother were members of the San Francisco Seals baseball franchise. After Pearl Harbor, Dorothy was selected as a stewardess for Trans World Airlines as one of only 300 stewardesses fleet-wide. She knew many locations and many people. Her memories and family story-telling span amazing times for our country. She was introduced to her future husband, Warren Carlyle Bayliss of Mountcrest Ranch, Hilt, Calif. while she was a stewardess and he was a naval aviator assigned to the naval airfield at Alameda, Calif. The introduction was facilitated by well-known Rogue Valley residents, the Parsons/ Day family members of Hillcrest Orchards, Hillcrest Road, Medford. After World War II ended, Dorothy and Warren were married March 2, 1946 in San Francisco. Attending were family from San Francisco, family and friends from Mountcrest Ranch, Hilt and the Rogue Valley. The couple resided in Hilt, Calif. and attended many social and community functions in the Rogue Valley until moving their family to Medford. Dorothy participated in a number of Rogue Valley groups, assisting Mary Parsons Day to form the Hillcrest Committee. She was a charter member of the Junior Service League serving hearing impaired children of this area. Dorothy assisted the local Red Cross in the hospitals with blood donations. She participated in the Junior Service League Follies. Dorothy was a well-known golfer at Rogue Valley Country Club and belonged to the Lady Golfer group for 50 years, traveling the state at golf tourneys. She had many friends and was admired for a keen wit, intelligence and quick humor. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Bayliss Darland; son-in-law, Tim Darland; her grandsons, Scott Darland with fiancé, Jennifer Lack and step-children, Sophia and Adam Lack, Medford and Tony Darland, Muskegon, Mich., his wife, Jenna Vander Lee Darland and great-grandchildren, Nolan Mark Darland, Evelyn Louise Darland and Faith Kay Bayliss Darland; son, Marc Bayliss and his family, Misty Hartley and step-daughter, Tiffany Kelley; preceding her in death, husband, Warren Carlyle Bayliss, brothers and sisters-in-law Dr. and Mrs. James Carroll Bayliss, Medford, and Dr. and Mrs. William Reginald Bayliss, Myrtle Creek, OR; sister Lucile Murphy Hawes, San Francisco and brother, William Murphy, San Francisco, plus numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Providence Hospice for care at Dorothy’s end of life and Apple Hill Senior Foster Care facility. The owners and staff of Apple Hill provided a home for our mother for nearly five years where she was happy and comfortable. God bless her soul. A memorial date to be announced. Contributions in commemoration of Dorothy’s life can be made to the American Red Cross; Providence Hospice, Rogue Valley Country Club Youth Golf Program; Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church or charity of choice.
